Si les portraits gravés au physionotrace (sorte de pantographe vertical) furent exécutés en multiples - l'acheteur recevait une plaque gravée et douze tirages sur papier - les dessins préparatoires exécutés grandeur nature étaient, sauf exception, faits en exemplaire unique. Il en subsiste peu. Celui-ci est particulièrement intéressant pour son traitement avec son fond au pastel rosé.

Bouchardy (actif en 1808-1840) fut le successeur de Gilles-Louis Chrétien, l’inventeur du physionotrace, et continua à exploiter ce procédé au Palais Royal à Paris.

If portraits engraved with the physionotrace (a sort of vertical pantograph) avec numerous -the buyer received a set of 12 engravings plus the copper - the preparatory and nature size drawings were unique, unless otherwise requested. Few have survived. This one is particularly interesting for  its treatment with a soft pink pastel background.

Bouchardy (active 1808-1840) was the successor of Gilles-Louis Chretien, the inventor of the physionotrace, and he worked at Palais Royal in Paris.
